Scholarships

Jean’s Angels are proud to offer two distinct scholarships to underprivileged Lowcountry children each year. Named after the late parents of Jean’s Angels founder Katrina Carpenter, these scholarships recognize the hard work, perseverance, and spirit of the next generation of difference-makers in our society.

The rufus smith scholarship

The Rufus Smith Scholarship fund was created in memory of Rufus Smith, the father of Jean’s Angels founder Katrina Carpenter. Rufus attended Baptist Hill High School in Hollywood, South Carolina, where he was an avid football and basketball player. After graduating from high school, he worked for Flour Daniel as a pipefitter.

Rufus was a wonderful, devoted, and loving father and husband. He is remembered in the community for his generosity, friendship, and dedication to his loved ones. He always put others before himself.

In establishing this scholarship, Rufus's family and friends wish to recognize the dedication to continued education and community service of a Baptist High School Student.

BoBBY JEAN SMITH SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Bobby Jean Smith, the mother of Jean’s Angels founder Katrina Carpenter, set a great example for everyone around her in giving to others. She was a wife and a mother to nine beautiful children and always made time to help her church, her community, and anyone in need.

She was best defined by what she did for others in her lifetime. In fact, one of her favorite sayings was, "the more I give, the more I get.” In saying this, my mother meant that she found her true personal fulfillment in seeing the impact of her giving to others.

Bobby Jean Smith had an unwavering belief in the value of showing God's love, and she quickly established a loving reputation as "everyone's mother." She would cook and feed anyone who was hungry. If a child ever needed clothing or a warm meal, my mom made sure that child got it.

Even while she was hospitalized, she was spreading God's word and still blessing others. My mom's life was a model of public service, and she lived the values of family, faith, and hard work that she instilled in her children. Her commitment and generosity will continue to touch the entire community and she will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Bobby Jean Smith tirelessly gave to those in need and is a living example of "what you do for the least of my brothers, that you do for me." Today, her name lives on through the Bobby Jean Smith Scholarship Fund, which was established to motivate and reward the next generation of social servants who continually give to those less fortunate, and help to promote a "pay it forward" attitude in our society.

The Bobby Jean Smith Scholarship Fund also requires two letters of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, coach, or supervisor, and a cover letter of no more than 900 words.
